1,125,648. Refining head oils of toothed cetaceans. NITTO HOGEI K.K. 26 May, 1966 [17 Feb., 1966], No.23519/66. Heading C5C. A process for refining head oils of toothed cetaceans comprises heating and melting the head oil at 40-60‹ C., adding water of the same temperature and agitating the mixture to solidify only the higher free fatty acids present, allowing the mixture to stand, separating the solidified higher fatty acids from the liquid oil, adding an aqueous NaCl solution to the oil by sprinkling, agitating the mixture to dissolve the lower fatty acids, allowing the mixture to stand, separating the oil component and washing it with water. The aqueous salt solution may be a physiological salt solution or sea water, the latter preferably being adjusted to a pH of 7À2 to 8À2 by addition of a carbonate, phosphate or borax.
