Abstract

1,125,321. Lapping. BURMAH OIL TRADING Ltd. 3 Feb., 1966 [18 Feb., 1965], No. 6996/65. Heading B3D. A lapping machine comprises a lapping plate adapted to carry a wear ring or rings, ring contacting means located adjacent the centre of the plate and control means actuable to vary the position of that surface of the ring contacting means which is adapted to engage the ring or rings so as to vary the radial position of the ring or rings on the plate. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, a tapered edge 15a on each wear ring 15 engages a tapered roller 10 freely rotatable on a sleeve 7 vertically adjustable, by a screw-threaded spindle 11 operated by a hand wheel 13, on a pillar 6 having at its lower end a screw-threaded extension 5 received in a central tapped hole in the lapping plate. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, wear rings 21 engage freely rotatable rollers 27 carried by the lower end of a spindle 23 mounted in an arm 22 extending over the lapping plate 20 ; a wormwheel 24 on the upper end of the spindle meshes with a worm-shaft 25 operated by a hand wheel 26, whereby the spindle 23 may be rotated to vary the position of the rollers 27 and thus of the rings 21. The supporting and adjusting elements may be positioned below the lapping plate so that only the rollers on a vertical spindle taken through the centre of the lapping plate protrude above the top surface of the plate. Adjustment of the rollers may be effected by a cam.
