Abstract

1,125,319. Edge-connectors for printed circuit boards; knife edge connections to tape cables. UNITED CARR Inc. 7 Dec., 1965 [16 Dec., 1964], No. 51893/65. Heading H2E. In a tape cable connector, electrical contacts mounted in an insulating body each have, at one end, a cutting blade which splits the end portion of a conducting tape of a cable secured in the body so that both sides of the blade make contact with the tape. In one embodiment (Fig. 1) the cable 29 is clamped between two portions 20, 21 of an insulating block so that grooves (63, 64, Fig. 2, not shown) extending through each portion are aligned to form vertical slots 38 each bisected by a cable tape 29. Correct positioning of the cable may be assisted by the use of transparent body portions and cable insulation or by chamfers 66 and 67 and aligned notches (64, 65) on the body portions, and securing of the cable may be assisted by the use of roughened surfaces or co-operating ridges and grooves (Fig. 4, not shown). Contacts 4, each terminating at one end in a blade 7 with a cutting edge 8 and at the other in two springy fingers 10 for engaging a printed circuit panel, are secured in slots in an insulating housing 3 by engagement of shoulders and springy tongues 11 with walls 16. The cable-carrying block 20-21 is guided into a hollow portion of the housing 3, by means of projections 53 and slots 52, so that the blades 7 are snugly received in the slots 38 and split the tapes 29, separation of the block and housing being prevented by engaging projections 48, 49. In a modification (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) the connector block comprises an L-shaped member (76), having contact-carrying slots, and a further insulating member (77) which clamps the cable to the L-shaped member. Preferably the contact blades are arranged to perpendicularly bisect the ends of the cable tapes but they may enter bent-back tapes at any point to slit them longitudinally. (Fig. 8, not shown).
