Abstract

1,125,289. Counting particles. COULTER ELECTRONICS Ltd. Sept. 8, 1965, No. 38478/65. Heading G1N. Particle study apparatus operating on the Coulter principle is constructed so that all the particles in a sample can be studied and subsequently recovered. Vessels 12, 14 are clamped together to define a sealed chamber 54 which is connected by an outlet pipe 38 to a vacuum source. A wafer 36 having a small aperture is secured to vessel 12 coaxially with an orifice in the bottom thereof, for example as described in Specification 907, 028. A platinum electrode is deposited coaxially with the orifice and is connected by a similarly deposited strip 70 to terminal 74. The sample to be studied is placed in vessel 12 and is drawn through the aperture. When all the liquid in vessel 12 has passed through the aperture additional liquid may be added to carry any particles remaining in vessel 12 through the aperture. After a test the apparatus may be dismantled and the particles recovered from vessel 14. The apparatus may be used for studying metered portions of a sample if a metering device as described in Specification 865, 069 is used. The particles may be of gold or platinum.
