Abstract

1,121,550. Counting particles. COULTER ELECTRONICS Ltd. Nov.10, 1965 [Nov. 25, 1964], No. 47696/65. Heading G1N. In apparatus for counting particles suspended in a liquid, e.g. leukocytes in a blood sample, as the liquid flows through an aperture in an insulating wall separating two electrodes (26,28), the aperture is formed in a flexible elastic diaphragm so that in the event of debris blocking the aperture, the diaphragm can expand, thereby allowing the debris to pass through the aperture. The diaphragm may be rubber or cellulose and may be secured under tension to the wall of a glass or plastic tube (10) by a glass, plastic or metal ring (52), Fig. 4 (not shown). If a metal ring is used, it may serve as electrode (26) and may be of platinum. In response to the presence of debris in the aperture, as detected by an increase in pressure in tube (10), an alarm (34) and an auxiliary pump (36) are operated automatically. The pump (36) applies further pressure to force the debris through the aperture. Alternatively, negative pressure may be applied to suck the diaphragm inward. Pump (36) may be operated manually.
