Abstract

1,124,549. Organ percussion systems. HAMMOND CORP. 19 June, 1967 [23 June, 1966], No. 28068/67. Heading G5J. In an organ percussion system, a variety of effects, e.g. chime, xylophone, glockenspiel, piano, is achieved by combining the synthesis and formant approaches. As shown in Fig. 1, each signal lead from a bright wave generator 10 is connected to a percussion keyer at 12, controlled by a playing key at 16, and the outputs from the keyers are collected in half octave groups (excepting the low-frequency octave 13-24), amplified at 14 and filtered at 22 to leave only the fundamental sine waves. A harmonic selector matrix 18, controlled by tabactuated contacts at 20, is used to choose the finally synthesized harmonic content of the tone signals fed to the output. Other tab-actuated contacts control keyers 12 to determine the choice of a short, medium or long decay envelope. Signals from the filters 22 are amplified at 28 and passed to the output 30 via the tab control system 20. The output may be connected through reverberation or vibrato systems, swell control mechanisms and power amplifiers to one or more speakers. Leads 24 from the drivers 14 are also connected to individual piano and banjo formants 32, which attenuate certain frequencies and enhance others to give tone coloration. The piano and banjo tones, taken from the formants 32 through separate leads 34 and 38, respectively, pass through preamplifiers 36 and 40 and via the tab controls 20 to the output 30. The keyboard 16 includes an arrangement for reiterating the percussion envelope, and a mechanism for playing arpeggios.
