Abstract

[Also in Division B5] A sawing head comprises a rotary head for holding a workpiece to be cut, and an abrasive wheel or a saw for effecting a cutting action on the workpiece as it rotates. The head has a chuck which may be hydraulically, pneumatically or manually operated and be arranged to grip the workpiece at one or both ends. The saw may be of the rotary, band or reciprocating type. The head may be driven at a fixed or variable speed and may be locked in position during sawing of non-circular workpieces. The head is adjustable through 180 degrees about a vertical axis between one position in which the workpiece is rotating in the same direction as the cutting stroke and a second position in which the workpiece rotates in the opposite direction to the cutting stroke. The workpiece may be fed through the head by one or more roller stands and feed mechanism and the saw or wheel may be adjustable longitudinally of the workpiece. The head may be rotatable in reverse direction.
