Abstract
Plastics sheet material is ornamented by aplying particulate material to a rotating roller having an outer covering formed by irregularly wrapping a twisted fabric material around the roller in a manner such that the covering presents an outer surface constituted by irregular folds of the fabric material, and transferring the particulate material from the folds of the fabric material to the plastics sheet material so as to provide a randomly distributed coating of the particulate material. The particulate material may be powdered polyvinyl chloride, cut textile fibers of say a polyamide, a polyester, a polyacrylate or polyvinyl chloride, hemp, cotton, flax, jute, china glass or sisal, wool, silk, or a material of mineral origin. Fibres may be coloured. The plastics sheet material may be a thermoplastic material. The particulate material may be further covered by a layer of plastics material which may be either translucent or transparent, applied as a plastisol or as a sheet by heat welding or by using a suitable adhesive. Further particulate material can then be applied to the composite structure. A suitable plastisol is one based on polyvinyl chloride. In the figure apparatus for ornamenting the plastics sheet material comprises a roller consisting of a hollow wooden cylinder 8 coated with a layer of polyurethane sponge 9. A twisted strip of fabric is irregularly wrapped around the roller to provide an outer covering 10, the fabric being a canvass the warp of which is made of pure lapped goat hair coated or impregnated with polytetrafluoroethylene. Feeding means for the particulate material comprises hopper 5, trough 6 and seive 7. The hopper and trough 6 are secured to electromagnetic vibrating units 4 resting on shock absorbers 2. The intensity of vibration of the unit 4 is controlled by an adjustable rheostat. The roller is vertically adjustable by means of a crank-controlled system 11. In use, plastics sheet material 13 continuously moving in direction 14 is urged by the supporting table 12 against the roller and causes it to rotate in the direction shown by arrow 15. The vibratory apparatus 4 is then energised and the particulate material consisting of say textile threads of from 5 to 20 denier and cut into lengths of 0.5 to 1.0 millimeter disposed in hopper 5 slides down the trough 6, drops into the seive 7 from which it is distributed onto the roller.ALSO:In the figure apparatus for ornamenting plastics sheet material comprises a roller consisting of a hollow wooden cylinder 8 coated with a layer of polyurethane sponge 9. A twisted strip of fabric is irregularly wrapped around the roller to provide an outer covering 10, the fabric being a canvass the warp of which is made of pure lapped goat hair coated or impregnated with polytetrafluoroethylene. Feeding means for the particulate material comprises hopper 5, trough 6 and sieve 7. The hopper and trough 6 are secured to electromagnetic vibrating units 4 resting on shock absorbers 2. The intensity of vibration of the unit 4 is controlled by an adjustable rheostat. The roller is vertically adjustable by means of a crank-controlled system 11.
