Abstract

[Also in Division F2] Lengths of pipe 13, 14 of a submarine pipeline are sealed in a surrounding open-bottomed chamber 5 anchored on or adjacent to the sea bed and containing inert gas at superatmospheric pressures sufficient to support the hydrostatic pressure of the water, the ends of the pipes being arc welded by operators wearing closed circuit breathing apparatus. The inert gas may be nitrogen, carbon dioxide, argon or helium and fed to the chamber from a boat via a line 12 carrying electric cables and gas conduits.
