Abstract

1369772 Gaseous seals CREUSOT-LOIRE 21 Feb 1973 [23 Feb 1972] 8590/73 Heading F2B Means, e.g. for sealing against a consumable electrode 1 being fed into an electro-slag refining apparatus comprises a wall portion defining a passage for the electrode 1 and having means 10 for introducing an inert atmosphere, e.g. argon to prevent oxidation, and a chest 3 connected to a sealing gas supply 12, e.g. air or nitrogen, having at least one outlet 13 arranged to direct a sheet of sealing gas upwardly and obliquely with respect to the electrode 1. The chest 3 is movably supported on a fixed, watercooled chest 4 through inflatable sealing joints 16, 17, an electrical insulator 5 spacing the chest 4 from an ingot mould 6. Cooling water is circulated through the chest 4 via conduits 8, 9, and pressurized air or nitrogen supplied to a further chest 7 impinges around the electrode 1, ensuring centring of the chest 3 relative thereto.
