Abstract
1,248,556. Vacuum degassing. LEYBOLDHERAEUS-VERWALTUNG G.m.b.H. and METALLURGIE HOBOKEN. March 12, 1970 [March 14, 1969], No.12033/70. Heading C7D. A method of purifying and vacuum degassing a molten metal comprises continuously conveying the molten metal from a bath thereof along a first path into a vacuum treating unit comprising at least two vacuum degassing chambers situated at the same elevational level, passing the molten metal through the chambers in succession and maintaining a gas-tight seal between adjacent chambers, and returning the metal from the last chamber to the bath along a second path. The molten metal may be conveyed along the first path by means of a conveying gas for example air, oxygen, chlorine, hydrogen, carbon monoxide a hydrocarbon compound on a chlorine compound, or nitrogen. The pressure in the degassing chambers preferably decreases in the direction of the flow of the molten metal. Suitable apparatus embodiments are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The second chamber 6 may be provided with a sloping, stepped or undular drainage apron 15. A number of the apparatus units may be arranged in series and/or parallel between a metal melting plant and a continuous casting plant Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown). Parts of the apparatus may be constructed of graphite. The process may be applied to molten copper. The apparatus may be heated by an induction heater 2, Fig. 1. It is stated that the method and apparatus are suitable for batchwise operation.
