Abstract

Adipic acid is prepared from the acid aqueous washing liquor obtained in the air oxidation of cyclohexane and which contains from 20-50% of organic by-products namely hydroxycaproic, adipic, glutaric and succinic acids and monocarboxylic acids by reaction with nitric acid at from 10 DEG to 40 DEG C. in the presence of nitrogen dioxide. A concentration of nitric acid of from 40 to 50%, and of nitrogen dioxide of 0.5 to 10% by weight on the reaction mixture and a temperature of 10 DEG to 40 DEG C. for the reaction are preferred. Crystalline adipic acid is removed with the aid of stirred impact bodies and conventionally separated, leaving a residual acid mixture of adipic, glutaric, and succinic acids.
