Abstract
In a process for the preparation of adipic acid by reacting cyclohexane in a liquid phase with molecular oxygen in a first oxidation zone, to produce cyclohexanone, cyclohexanol, and other oxygenated products, removing unreacted cyclohexane, reacting the residual mixture in solution in a saturated monocarboxylic acid (2-6 carbon atoms) e.g. acetic acid with molecular oxygen in a second oxidation zone to produce an adipic acid solution from which the adipic acid is crystallized, the adipic acid crystals are washed with water or a saturated monocarboxylic acid (2-6 C), e.g. acetic acid or a mixture thereof, the wash liquor separated and concentrated to an adipic acid and impurities concentration not above that of the mother liquor and the concentrated wash liquor recycled to a further quantity of solution containing adipic acid obtained from the second oxidation zone prior to the recovery by crystallization of the adipic acid therefrom. The first oxidation stage may be at 125-175 DEG C. and 55-500 p.s.i.g. and the second at 60-105 DEG C. and a pressure of from atmospheric to 1000 p.s.i.g. with a manganese or manganese and copper catalyst.
