Abstract
A hard bituminous solid composition is made by mixing a finely divided solid composition with 3-16% wt., based on total composition, of bituminous binder, compressing to theoretical density 70-98%, and curing for 4-80 hrs. at 300-500 DEG F. The solid contains 70-98 wt. per cent particles of size 4.76-0.05 mm., and less than 10% wt. clay. The bituminous binder may include e.g. 1-10 wt. per cent of rubber, resins, polymers, or elastomers. Also present may be 1-30 wt. per cent of other solids, including fibres and expanded slag or clay. The bituminous binder may be asphalt cut back with hydrocarbons or halohydrocarbons. The mixing may be performed by preheating the solids, and adding the molten asphalt as a spray, or defoamed or atomized. Before compacting, the mixture may be exposed to the air to harden the asphalt, or blanketed with inert gas to prevent hardening. The solid preferably contains \sO 1-2% moisture, or the asphalt-solid mix may be dried before compaction; in this case, emulsified asphalt cut-backs may be employed.
