Abstract
1,122,983. Collapsible wheel chairs. R. G. BIDDLE. 1 Dec., 1965 [17 Sept., 1964], No. 37947/64. Heading B7B. A collapsible wheel chair comprises two tubular aluminium side frames 10 connected together by a flexible resilient plastics seat and back 33, 32 in tension, and by three pairs of aluminium links 11, 12, 13, each pair comprising links 25, 26 pivoted together at 28 and pivoted to the side frames 10 at 29, so that they are movable through an overcentre position when the chair is opened from its collapsed state. Each side frame 10 comprises a back portion 14 which is either unitary or comprises two parts 23, 24 pivoted together. An arm rest support 37 engages telescopically, and vertically adjustably in the front tubes 20 and carries a stud 53 selectively engageable in and latchable in one of a pair of apertures in a bracket secured to the part 24, so that the rake of the back 33 may be adjusted. The wheels 58 are detachably retained in bearing blocks on the frames 10 by spring loaded plungers. A brake finger 68 on each frame is movable by a handle 75 through an overcentre position into the "on" position. A steel or aluminium footrest support 42 is removably mounted on each front tube 20 by means of a bracket 43 having a mouthed slot 46 engageable on a peg 46a on the tube 20. Each foot rest 41 is carried by a tube 83 engaging telescopically in the support 42, the tube 83 and the support 42 having apertures in which can be engaged a peg carried by a spring clip 85.
