In a water-closet flushing system comprising a pedal 7 connected to the flushing mechanism through linear draw means 7, the latter extends into the cistern 1 through an opening in the cistern cover for example, and is connected, directly to the operating rod of a piston cylinder 3, a protective enclosure 9a therefor having a part 9 to act as a directionreversing guide. The opening may be the aperture usually for the flushing lever or may be between the cover 2 and the cistern body 1 or in a body wall. The enclosure 9a where straight may be a separate or integral extension tube. The pedal 7 is in a housing 6, which the draw means 4 enters at 8. The draw means 4 is coupled to the rod through a tension spring 5.
