Abstract

1,122,381. Generating by planing. DRYSDALE & CO., Ltd. 4 Feb., 1965 [4 Sept. 1963], No. 34875/63. Heading B3L. A device for generating curved surfaces comprises means for imparting an orbital motion to a cutting tool 6 about an axis parallel to the surface of a work-table 8 and including a connecting-rod 3 carrying the tool 6 at one end and engaging a variable-throw crank 2 at the other, the connecting-rod being pivoted also to a cross-head 4 slidable in a fixed guideway 5, and the table 8 being rotatably mounted on a base 7 and carrying a drum 9, (10) connected by a cable 11 to a winding drum 12, (13). The crank 2 replaces the tool in a horizontal boring mill. The cable carries a weight 17 and the drums 12, 13 are selectively engaged with a driving- shaft 1 and by a clutch 15. The work 18 is a pattern box for a scroll casing of a centrifugal pump. The speed of the table varies during rotation according to the shape of the drums 9, 10, and the throw of the crank-pin is simultaneously varied to produce the shape 19 required. The table 8 is then traversed by moving the base 7 and the crank-throw varied to produce the shape 20. The other half of the pattern box is produced by reversing the clutch 15.
