Abstract

4-Imino-3-cyanopiperidines are obtained by mixing together a solution of aromatic hydrocarbon free radicals and alkali metal ions in an organic solvent, said solution being free of elemental alkali metal, and a di-(b -cyanoalkyl)-amine of the formula <FORM:1122110/C2/1> wherein R1, R2 and R3 are hydrogen atoms o C1- 10 alkyl groups, the molar ratio of alkali metal to amine in the mixture being from 0.05 to 0.3:1, maintaining the mixture at a temperature of 20-80 DEG C. for a period of time sufficient to precipitate from the mixture the 4 - imino - 3 - cyanopiperidine formed and recovering the latter. The aromatic hydrocarbon may be naphthalene, anthracene, biphenyl or phenanthracene, and in the specific examples the amine starting material employed is di-(b -cyanoethyl) amine and the solvents employed are dimethoxyethane and tetrahydrofuran.
