Abstract

Ammonia and chlorine are prepared from NH4Cl using a catalyst comprising at least one iron compound, at least one element taken from V, Mn and Zn in compound form or elementary form such that the atomic ratio of the element or elements to the iron is from 0.02 to 0.25, and an alkali metal chloride. Such a catalyst reacts with NH4Cl according to the equation <FORM:1121671/C1/1> at 400-410 DEG C. and ammonia gas may be removed in a stream of nitrogen. The chlorinated residue if treated at 500-510 DEG C. with a stream of oxygen liberates chlorine. Comparative examples are given.ALSO:Catalysts useful in the preparation of NH3 and Cl2 from NH4Cl comprise at least one iron compound, at least one element selected from V, Mn and Zn in the combined state or elementary form such that the atomic ratio of the said element or elements to iron is 0.02 to 0.25, and an alkali metal chloride. Preferably the composition comprises Fe2O3 and Mn3O4, ZnO or V2O5, and KCl. The source of Fe2O3 may be bauxite. An example describes the preparation of a catalyst from iron-loaded bauxite, KCl, Mn3O4 and CuCl3.
