Abstract
<PICT:1011614/C1/1> Chlorine is produced by contacting HCl and/or NH4Cl with moving beds of inert granular supports integrated with chlorides or oxides of Fe, and with chlorides of Cu or of Cd, and with alkali metal chlorides and flowing by gravity through superimposed reaction chambers wherein occur successively reduction, chlorination and oxidation of the masses, the oxidation being carried out in two stages comprising (1) re-oxidation of the metals of the integrating salts to their maximum valency and (2) oxidizing dechlorination of said salts, whereby Cl2 is liberated. The apparatus used may be essentially that described in Specification 1,005,771, with addition of a fourth chamber, chamber 3 being used for re-oxidation and chamber 4 (see Figure) for dechlorination. The latter has inlet 11 for oxidizing gas and outlet 12 for the Cl2-containing gases produced, part of which may be fed into chamber 3 through conduit 7 to provide just sufficient Cl2 to effect the re-oxidation. Alternatively, re-oxidation may be effected by injection of about one-third of the total requirement of O2 into inlet 9. NH3 may be recovered from NH3-metallic chloride complexes formed during chlorination by sweeping the granules with inert gas.
