Abstract
A method of treating iron powder to increase its compressibility, comprises the steps of coldworking the powder to form a powder aggregate, pulverizing the aggregate to reduce the particle size, oxidizing the powder thus obtained to an H2-loss value of between 1% and 10% and then reducing the powder in hydrogen. The coldworking is performed by rolling and while this operation alone increases the compressibility of the powder obtained by the subsequent pulverizing, it also reduces the green strength of the compact. By oxidizing the powder, preferably to an H2-loss value of 5% and then reducing it in dry hydrogen at 960 DEG C. for 60 mins., the green strength is increased again. After reduction the particle size is reduced to less than 0.15 m.m.
