Abstract

1,120,614. Nuclear power plant. ESCHER WYSS A.G. 20 Sept., 1965 [7 Oct., 1964; 5 Nov., 1964], No. 40050/65. Heading G6C. [Also in Division F1] In a closed circuit gas turbine plant having at least one turbine stage and in which the working medium for the turbine is heated at least at two points in the circuit, heating is effected at one of the points by a nuclear reactor and at least at one of the other points in a heat exchanger which derives the heat it gives to the medium from the working medium outlet side of the reactor, means being provided for returning the medium from the heat exchanger to the reactor. In the plant, which drives a generator 3, gas from a compressor 2 flows through a heat exchanger 9 to a turbine stage 11 and then to a nuclear reactor 8 where it is reheated before expanding through a second turbine stage 1<SP>2</SP> and returning through a cooler 7 to the compressor 2. The heat exchanger 9 receives its heating gas from a branch pipe 10 leading from the reactor outlet side 5<SP>2</SP>, the gas being returned by a circulating blower 11 driven by an electric motor 12 to the reactor inlet side 5<SP>1</SP>. The blower 11 may alternatively be driven by an auxiliary turbine using gas tapped from and returned to the main cycle, or the blower may be replaced by a jet pump or a pressure exchanger device. Figs. 2 to 6 (not shown) illustrate slightly modified arrangements of the one or more heat exchangers 9 (or 13) and the reactor 8 in the closed cycle, in all oases the heat exchangers receiving their heating gas through a pipe leading from the outlet side of the reactor 8 to its inlet side.
