Abstract

1,120,349. Dry shavers. R. TAPPER. 23 March, 1967, No. 13837/67. Heading B4B. An electric shaver comprises means for cutting hair, an activating electrode disposed adjacent to and electrically insulated from the hair cutting means, a return electrode upon the shaver and spaced from the activating electrode, and alternating or pulsating low voltage electrical means connected between the electrodes to activate them for erecting each hair by electrical stimulation of the arrector pili muscle of each hair. In the form shown in Fig. 1, shaving heads 1 to 3 form the return electrodes and rollers 4 to 7 form the activating electrodes. The electrodes are connected to an energizing circuit which may comprise an A.C. source 10, Fig. 2, a step-down transformer 11 and a half wave rectifier 15. The circuit may, alternatively, comprise a battery 20, Fig. 3, a buzzer device 21 to interrupt current flow from the battery, and a shunt resistor 25. In another form, the circuit comprises an A.C. source (10), Fig. 6 (not shown) and a full wave rectifier (45, 46). In another modification, a single head shaver is provided with an activating electrode (30), Fig. 4 (not shown) and two return electrodes (32, 33). In a further modification, the activating electrode comprises one or more shaver heads (40), Fig. 5 (not shown) the return electrodes being formed by metallic plates (41) on opposite sides of the shaver. The energizing circuit may comprise an A.C. source (10), Fig. 7 (not shown) and a step-down transformer (49). The shaver may comprise additional means to dispense an electrically conductive substance on the skin being shaved, the dispensing means constituting either the activating or return electrode. In an alternative embodiment, two means (51, 52), Fig. 8 (not shown) are provided for dispensing electrically conductive substance upon the area being shaved. The energizing circuit may comprise an electrical oscillator having a peaked output wave form, the oscillator including a semi-conductor device, e.g. a transistor (60), Fig. 9 (not shown). The oscillator pulse is amplified by a transistor (70) the collector electrode of which is connected to a step up transformer (72).
