An electric shaver comprises a base 45, a pair of electrodes 46 carried by said base and spaced apart a sufficient distance to allow hair to enter therebetween, and means for applying a sufficient potential across said electrodes to produce an electrical discharge therebetween to remove such hair located between said electrodes by what is believed to be a burning (or searing) operation. In the shaver shown, the base 45 is secured by screws 39 to a two-part casing containing a step-up transformer 22, a switch 34 (not shown) and a jack 30. The jack 30 is connected to the primary winding 26 through the switch 34, and the secondary winding 27 is connected to the electrodes 46 which are secured by screws 52 to a dielectric member 50 fixed to the base 45 by screws 51 and spacing nuts 53. The electrodes 46 have interdigitated fingers 49 and are surrounded by a cylindrical guard 47 and end guards 48. The guard 47, which may be of dielectric material or of steel, is provided with slots 56 registering with the spaces between the fingers 49 or may be rotatable and provided with perforations distributed over the entire cylindrical surface. Means may be provided for adjusting the spacing between the fingers 49, and for adjusting the voltage from the secondary winding 27. In, an alternative embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown), the transformer 22 is mounted in a separate casing provided with a plug for insertion in a domestic power point.
