Abstract

Micron-sized particles are reduced by partially filling a baffle-free, agitator-free, smooth-inner-surfaced cylindrical drum with a fluid suspension of particles, liquid and particulate grinding medium of size - 4+35 mesh. There is sufficient liquid to form a slip. The drum is continuously rotated about its horizontal axis at less than critical speed, so that the suspension occupies only the lower portion of the drum. The individual particles of grinding medium travel in continuous generally elliptical paths within the suspension. The density of the grinding medium is greater than that of the particles to be ground, and may comprise 1/32 inch steel balls or shot. Materials to be ground include calcined kaolin clay, limestone, talc, with additives, e.g. sodium silicate, and to reduce iron pick-up by the clay a high pH solution is used. This may include tetrasodium pyrophosphate, soda ash, sodium hydroxide.ALSO:Micron sized particles are reduced by partially filling a baffle-free, agitator-free, smooth-inner-surfaced cylindrical drum with a fluid suspension of particles, liquid and particulate grinding medium of size - 4 + 35 mesh.
