Abstract
1356913 Sink-float separation ZDRUZENO PREDUZECE "MAGNOHROM" ORGANIZACIJA KRALJEVO RUDNIKA MAGNEZITA BELA STENA and BASSE SAMBRE SA 21 March 1972 [22 March 1971] 13234/72 Heading B2H A process for separating a finely divided mineral into lighter and heavier fractions comprises contacting the mineral with a surface active agent having a hydrocarbon chain of at least 8 carbon atoms, feeding the mineral into a fluid medium having a density between that of the said lighter and heavier fractions, and separating independently from the medium that fraction which sinks and that fraction which floats. Suitable surface active agents include: C n H 2n+1 O(CH 2 CH 2 O) m -H, where n is an integer in the range 8 to 20, and m is an integer in the range 4 to 50; and petroleum sulphonates. The said fluid medium may consist of bromoform, tetrabromoethane or an aqueous suspension of finely divided magnetite or ferrosilicon. The mineral may be treated with an aqueous solution of the surface active agent prior to being fed to the said fluid meduim. Minerals suitable for treatment by the process include magnesite, dolomite, iron ore, diamonds, antimony ores, chromite and coal.
