Abstract

1334724 Centrifugal separators UNION CARBIDE CORP 28 Oct 1971 [29 Oct 1970] 50050/71 Heading B2P An apparatus for separating a liquid suspension of particles into fine and coarse particulated fractions comprises a cyclone 1 having an input feed line 3 from a supply sump 9, an overflow discharge line 2 for the fine particulated fraction and an underflow discharge line 4 for the coarse particulated fraction, and at least one feed-back link 7, 10 (20, 21) between at least one of the overflow and underflow discharge lines and the input feed line. The overflow discharge line 2 separates into a discharge line 5 which feeds a flotation process 6 and the feed back link 7, 10 which is controlled by a valve 8. The underflow discharge line 4 separates into a discharge line 19 and the feed back link 20, 21 which is controlled by a valve 13. A liquid level sensing means 11 is arranged in sump 9 to generate a signal to operate valves 8 and/or 13 via lines 22 and/or 23 whenever the liquid suspension of particles in sump 9 decreases below a predetermined height whereby a constant flow rate of the suspension through the cyclone is maintained. A densitometer 12 is inserted in discharge line 5 and is coupled to power means (not shown) for generating a signal to operate either valve 8 or valve 13 via line 24 or 25 whenever the density of the overflow discharge is less than or exceeds a predetermined set range. A number of cyclones may be connected in series or parallel and a portion of the overflow from a first cyclone may be diverted to the input feed of a record connected cyclone so as to control the density overflow of the latter. Particles that may be separated include those of scheelite, molybdenum ores, copper ores or other non-ferrous or non-metallic ores.
