Abstract

1,119,952. Boring tools. SECRETARY OF STATE FOR DEFENCE. 27 Oct., 1965 [27 Oct., 1964], No. 43726/64. Heading B3C. A boring tool for machining deep bores comprises a cutting head 22 and a flexible coupling 1 by means of which the cutting head is connected to a boring bar 3. The flexible coupling, in one embodiment, comprises a rear member 4 threadedly engageable with the boring bar 3 and resiliently connected to an intermediate member 5 by bolts 14 and studs 17 that pass through a plastics or rubber washer 10 and bushes 18. The intermediate member 5 has a front member 6 screwed thereon to which is attached the cutting head 22. Burnishing inserts are provided in the front member at 20 and in the cutting head at 24, 25 and 26, the latter insert being arranged to move radially outwards by the pressure of cutting oil supplied to the cutting tip 23. In another embodiment the flexible coupling is provided by peripherally arranged springs (44) (Fig. 2, not shown), set in radial slots so as to hold parts (27), (28) resiliently together via inserts (33) and ball bearings (37). A trepanning cutting head may be used and a central bore in the head, coupling and boring bar allows swarf removal.
