Abstract

1,122,133. Boring head. SECRETARY OF STATE FOR DEFENCE. 27 Oct., 1965 [27 Oct., 1964], No. 43727/64. Heading B3C. A cutting head for machining deep bores has a number of burnishing inserts 9, 11 and 12 arranged circumferentially adjacent the cutting tip or tips 4, one of said burnishing inserts 12 being mounted on a piston (17), (Fig. 3, not shown), for radial movement by the pressure of a supply of cutting oil to the tip 4. Four burnishing inserts 9 are spaced on one side of the cutting head 3 and a fixed insert 11 together with the movable insert 12 are mounted on the opposite side of the cutting head 3, (Fig. 2, not shown), the movable insert 12 being biased inwards by a spring (16). The cutting head 3 is screw connected to a flexible connector, 1 which may also include burnishing inserts 2, which in turn is connected to a boring bar (not shown). The fixed burnishing insert 11 may be discarded in a modified cutter head. The tip 4 is adjustable by a wedge 5 and screws 6.
