Abstract
Crystalline polymers having an inherent viscosity in tetralin at 145 DEG C. of at least 0.1 are made by polymerizing alpha-olefines in the presence of a solid stereospecific catalyst, hydrogen, and a compound that during polymerization, does not polymerize to a solid and is selected from compounds of the formula (1) RCH=CHR, (2) R2C=CHR, or (3) R2C=CH2, where R is an alkyl radical. The compound may be separated from the polymer after polymerization. Specified alpha-olefines are ethylene, propylene, butene-1, pentene-1, octene-1, decene-1, 3-methyl-1-butene, 4-methyl - 1 - pentene, 4 - methyl - 1 - hexene, 5 - methyl - 1 - hexene, 4,4 - dimethyl - 1 - pentene, styrene, alpha - methylstyrene, allylcyclohexane, allylcyclopentane, and allylbenzene. Exemplified compounds of the above formula are 2-butene, 2-methyl-1-pentene, 2-heptene, and cis and trans-4-methyl-2-pentene. Exemplified polymers are polyethylene, polypropylene, poly-1-butene, and a copolymer of propylene and 1-butene. The polymerization conditions are conventional.
