Abstract

A continuous process for polymerizing 1-olefins to polymers of at least 85% crystallinity comprises feeding a suspension of solid polymerization catalyst in inert liquid to a closed reactor maintained completely filled with a slurry of catalyst, inert liquid used for suspending said catalyst, particulate polymer and liquid monomer but no other diluent, and withdrawing said slurry from said reactor at a predetermined rate, the temperature of the slurry being maintained below the fusion temperature of the particles and the solids content of the reactor being maintained at not greater than 60 weight per cent. Specified olefins ar ethylene, propylene, butene, pentene, hexene, 4-methyl pentene-1 and mixtures thereof. Specified catalysts comprise titanium trichloride with sodium amyl, aluminium powder, ethyl aluminium dichloride and hexamethylphosphoric triamide or ethyl aluminium sesquichloride and hexamethyl-phosphoric triamide; suspended in toluene. Unreacted monomer may be flashed from the slurry removed from the reactor and gaseous make-up monomer may be fed through the resulting dry particulate product to remove impurities from said monomer by reaction with residual catalyst. Apparatus suitable for carrying out the process of the invention is described and illustrated and examples describe the polymerization of (1-5) propylene, (6) butene-1, (7) 3-methylbutene-1 and (8) mixtures of propylene and butene-1.
