Abstract
In the continuous polymerization of 1-olefins to form a slurry of particulate polymer in liquid monomer, the slurry is discharged from the reactor by valve means comprising parts relatively movable to positions opening and closing said valve and a thin layer of particulate polymer between said parts for lubricating the same. The discharge system may comprise two valves, in series and operated sequentially, with a chamber between. The invention is illustrated by the polymerization of liquefied propylene in the presence of a catalyst formed from titanium trichloride, ethyl aluminium dichloride and hexamethyl phosphoric triamide to produce polymer particles of suitable size to function as lubricant, which particles replace the original grease lubricant in the valves and allow continuous subsequent operation.
