Abstract
<PICT:1119741/C6-C7/1> A protective film of metal oxide is applied to an oxide film resistor such that the protective film consists of a continuous layer of metal oxide merging into terminal regions of metal corresponding to the metal oxide, the metal oxide being either insulating or of a lower conductivity than the oxide forming the resistance element. The body of the resistor may be of glass or ceramic material, the resistance element is usually of tin oxide with or without other oxides but may be of cadmium or titanium oxide and the protective film may be of copper, iron or magnesium oxide. A second metal such as nickel or cobalt or silver, gold or platinium may be plated over the metal end terminal regions of the protective film. Metal terminals are attached to the resistor to make contact with the metallic regions of the protective film. Three methods for coating a quantity of resistors are described; they are 1. Depositing a metal layer, plating the terminal regions with a second metal (e.g. nickel) and oxidizing the rest of the metal layer thereby forming the protective oxide film, 2. Depositing a metal layer, oxidizing it completely, then reducing the terminal portions to the metal. 3. Depositing a metal layer, applying terminals e.g. end caps of nickel-plated mild steel to the end of the metal film and then oxidizing the film. Electroless plating methods are described for each method of production, but the oxidisable metal layer for the protective film may also be deposited by vacuum deposition or electro-deposition.
