Abstract
1,119,621. Fuelling reactors. EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY. 21 Dec., 1965 [22 Dec., 1964], No. 54161/65. Heading G6C. [Also in Division B4] A lead castle for transporting radio-active material, e.g. a fuel element, between a reactor channel and a hot cell comprises a hollow main body 2, 3 having the opening at its lower end closable by two blocks 5, 6 slidable on the castle base-plate 8. The castle is shown positioned over the opening 10 in the roof 11 of a hot cell 9. A charging device 7 for transferring radioactive material to or from the castle cavity comprises a vertically movable rod 14 connected to a casing 22 receiving the grab of an electric hoist (not shown), an extension 23 of the casing receiving the material engaged by the grab. An alpha enclosure 16 comprising a sleeve 20 and lower box 21 has an internal collar 29 whereby it is supported by the casing 22, a bellows 19 being connected between a head 25 of the casing and a flange 27 of the sleeve 20, In use, the charging device 7 and alpha enclosure 16 are lowered together by rotating a hand wheel 65 (Fig. 3, not shown) driving a pinion 69 engaging a rack 64 on the rod 14, the components moving from the chain-line position in Fig. 1 to the position shown in which a cover 17 of the box 21 hermetically engages a cover 12 of the hot cell 9. The final part of this downward movement is performed by rotating a drive nut 34 engaging an external screw thread on the upper end of the sleeve 20, this nut being driven by a pinion 38 through a shaft 39 and hand wheel 40. After removal of the covers 12, 17 conjointly into the box 21 by a two-stage upward and pivoting movement by mechanism 41 described with reference to Figs. 16-18 (not shown) driven by a shaft 43 and hand wheel 46, the charging device 7 may be moved further downwardly by the rack 64, independently of the enclosure 16, into the hot cell (or reactor), the bellows 19 permitting this relative movement. When uncoupling the castle from the hot cell operation of the hand wheel 40 enables the enclosure 16 to be moved upwards independently of the charge device 7 to break the seal between the closed covers 12, 17. Various mechanical interlocks are provided to ensure a correct sequence of the operations.
