A radiation type heat exchanger for preheating air with the exhaust gases from a magnetohydrodynamic conversion nozzle, comprises a prismatic radiation chamber 1 having a wall comprising lens shaped glass members 2 and through which the hot exhaust gases flow, surrounded by a refractory jacket 7 having a primatic cavity 8 parallel to and in register with each wall 2 each said cavity being divided into two compartments by a diaphragm 9, the slot of which coincides with the straight line of the foci of the corresponding lens, the air to be heated flowing through compartments 10 which act as block bodies. A gas having a low absorption (nitrogen or air free from carbon dioxide and water) may be circulated in space 3 formed by a slotted transparent e.g. glass wall 4, the gas passing through slots 6 to protect the wall from corrosion by the hot exhaust gases. The refractory material for the jacket 7 may be alumina or zirconia. An outer wall 11 of steel surrounds the exchanger. The exhaust gases and the air may flow in the same or the opposite direction.
