Abstract
1,118,786. Charge pumps. ZJEDNOCZENIE PRZEMYSLU TABORU KOLEJOWEGO. Aug. 16, 1965 [Aug. 20, 1964], No.35007/65. Heading F1B. During starting of an exhaust turbocharged engine, a piston compresor 10, driven at constant speed by an auxiliary engine, supplies air to an auxiliary valve controlled inlet port 9, excessive pressure in the piston pump delivery pipe at low turning speeds being prevented by a blow-off valve 26 through which excess air is delivered via pipe 27 to a receiver 3 feeding the normal inlet ports 2. A flap valve 33 prevents back flow through the compressor 31 of the air delivered through pipe 27. A valve operating lever 16 of the valve 17 is held in an operative position by a piston 19 urged to the left by the delivery pressure of the compressor 10; when the engine is operating normally, valve 23 is turned to connect pipe 22 to atmosphere, whereupon piston 19 is forced to the right by spring 24 to render valve 17 inoperative. The turbocharger can be run up to half speed, prior to starting, by turning cocks 28, 11, to direct air from compressor 10 through a nozzle 37 of the turbine. An air cooler 12 may be connected in the delivery line of compressor 10.
