A machine for suppressing the discontinuous yield point in sheet or strip metal comprises a pair of rolls between which the metal passes, one roll being in the form of a hollow drum 12 divided by radial seals 16, 17 into two compartments, one of which is filled with fluid under pressure. The drum is supported by sealed bearings 14, 15 on a fixed shaft 13, and the two rolls are urged together by an applied pressure a. Fluid is introduced into the compartment 20 under an adjustable pressure in order to control the degree of resilience of the roll gap. The drum may be of hardened rubber, synthetic plastics material, soft metal, or wood, and the seals may be of hard rubber or synthetic plastics material.
