Abstract

A ferromagnetic cobalt-iron alloy containing 85-95% cobalt and having a weight ratio of cobalt to iron of from 85:15 to 95:4.5 is cold drawn as a round wire to reduce the area by at least 95%. Up to 6% of V, Mo, Nb, Cr, Ti, Ta, W, up to 2% of Mn, Be, Mg, Ca or Al may be present and impurities may include C up to 0.25% Si up to 2% and up to 0.1% each S & P. A 1/4 " wire of the alloy may be annealed at 750-1000 DEG C.in H2, N2, Ar, He, or N2 + H2, then cold drawn to 2 mils with intermediate anneals at 950-1000 DEG C. at .025, .015, and .01 inches. The wire may then be flattened, e.g. to 0.5 x 6 mils, and finally annealed at 500-600 DEG C for up to 10 secs. Examples are given of suitable alloys and the remanence, coercive force and squareness ratio obtained after drawing.
