Abstract

Acyloin compounds of the formula R1CHOHCOCH3 where R1 is a 3,4-disubstituted phenyl radical in which said substituents are hydroxyl, C1-C4 alkoxy or C1-C4 alkylenedioxy radicals, said compounds being in the L configuration, are produced by contacting an aldehyde of the formula R1CO, where R1 is as defined above, with an acyloin producing strain of a growing culture of Aerobacter aerogenes (A.T.C.C. No. 211) or Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The invention also comprises L(-)3,4-dimethoxy-, L(-)3-methoxy - 4 - hydroxy- and L(-)3,4 - methylene-dioxy-phenyl acetyl carbinols. Examples are furnished. L - a - methyl - 3,4 - dihydroxyphenylalanine is produced by converting L(-)3,4-dimethoxyphenylacetyl carbinol to 4-carbamoyl - 4 - methyl - 5 - (3,4 - dimethoxyphenyl)-2-oxazolidinone and treating the latter with hydrogen iodide and red phosphorus.
