Abstract
1,118,258. Storing liquefied gases. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 26 Sept., 1966 [28 Sept., 1965], No. 42797/66. Heading F4P. Gas, e.g. methane, is stored as a mixture of liquid and solid phases in an inner reservoir 1 surrounded by a heat insulated outer reservoir 3 in open communication with the inner reservoir through ports 6 in the lower ends of the wall 2 thereof; the vapour space 8 of reservoir 3 being vented to atmosphere through a port 7. Ports 6 may be covered by strainers thus preventing solid phase from passing therethrough with liquid to reservoir 3. In operation reservoir 1 is completely filled to a level 11 in a valved filler conduit and the heat insulation of the walls 10 of reservoir 3 is so adjusted that the increase in volume of the contents of reservoir 1 resulting from melting of solid phase is at most equal to the decrease in volume of the contents of the reservoir 3 resulting from vaporization of liquid therein thereby obviating overflow of liquefied gas. The walls 2 of the inner reservoir 1 may also be heat insulated.
