Abstract

An electronically conducting glass composition comprises V2O5 containing up to 50 wt. per cent P2O3 together with CaO to prevent water solubility. CaO may be replaced by other metal oxides. Alternatively the glass composition may be V2O5 containing up to 50 wt. per cent Na or K metaphosphate. Phosphate, borate, germanate and chalkogenate glasses are also mentioned. When used in a temperature sensitive device, the glass composition may have electrodes of differing electro-potential joined thereto e.g. stainless or mild steel, Ni, Mo, Cr, Ti, Cu or alloys thereof with Cr, Mn or Al. In one embodiment the device may take the form of a co-axial cable with the space between the conductors packed with a vanadium glass and alumina, the alumina being present to resist movement of the conductors when the glass is in a fused condition.
