Abstract

[Also in Divisions B8 and G3] Apparatus for loading and unloading cargo in a ship by means of a cable and a winch includes means for changing the length of the cable in correspondence with the vertical movements of the ship relative to the pier on which the winch is mounted. The cable 12 (Fig. 1) passes over a fixed sheave block 21 carrying one set of sheaves 22 fixed to the block and a second set of sheaves 24 movable vertically by a piston 25, controlled hydraulically by a valve 32. The latter is provided with an electrical actuator 41 energized by amplifier 44 and driver 47. The amplifier is fed with a first signal from a position transducer 42 e.g. a potentiometer, representing the height of movable sheaves 24 and therefore the length of cable 12, and a second signal representing the relative positions of the ship 7 and the pier 9, derived from a tachogenerator 51 coupled to an auxiliary line 54 attached to the ship 7, whose output signal represents the speed of movement of the ship and is integrated at 62 to obtain a displacement signal. The difference between the two inputs to amplifier 44 controls valve 32 and hence the vertical position of the movable sheaves 24, and therefore maintains the height of the cargo 19 above the ship 7 at a desired value irrespective of the vertical movements of the ship in the water.
