Abstract

The invention comprises a synthetic crystalline zeolite, designated zeolite ZSM-4 having the composition: M 2/n O : Al2O3 : 6-15 SiO2 : 0-5 H2O where M is at least one cation and n is the valency of M, and having a specified x-ray powder pattern, which may be prepared by maintaining at a temperature of 20-150 DEG C. a reaction mixture with composition in mole ratios of oxides: R2O:(R2O + Na2O) = 0.01 to 0.99:1 (R2O + Na2O):SiO2 = 0.05 to 0.80:1 SiO2:Al2O3 = 5 to 60:1 H2O:(R2O + Na2O) = 15 to 600:1 where R is tetramethylammonium, until crystals of the zeolite are formed and recovering the crystals. The zeolite may be base exchanged with cations of one or more of hydrogen, alkylammonium, arylammonium, group I, group II, group III and group VIII elements, rare-earth metals, tin (II), lead (II), titanium (III), zirconium, hafnium, actinium, actinides, thorium, antimony (III), bismuth (III), chromium, manganese, technetium and rhenium. In a preferred method of preparation, the reaction mixture is formed using a "crystallization directing agent" comprising sodium oxide, alumina, silica and water having the composition Na2O:SiO2 = 1 to 4:1 SiO2:Al2O3 = 2 to 40:1 H2O:Na2O = 10 to 60:1 heating this agent for 0.2 to 4 hours at 40-70 DEG C., mixing with a solution containing sodium oxide, silica and water, adding a solution containing alumina and water to form a slurry and stirring, heating the slurry to 20-120 DEG C. for 0.5 to 1 hour, filtering, mixing the filter cake with an aqueous solution of tetramethylammonium hydroxide, and washing the crystals obtained until the washings have a pH below 11. This zeolite, either as formed or in a base exchanged form may be used as a catalyst for cracking oil, the zeolite preferably being dehydrated at 200-600 DEG C. in an inert atmosphere before use.
