Abstract

Soil retardancy is imparted to carpets by applying thereto an amide of the formula R-C (O)-NHCH2CHOHCH2 OH where R is alkyl, alkenyl or alkadienyl containing from 12 to 22 carbon atoms. The amide may be applied as an alcoholic solution, an alcohol-water solution, or as an aqueous dispersion containing a dispersant, with or without a water-soluble alcohol, wherein the dispersant is an imidazolinium compound of the formula <FORM:1117156/D1-D2/1> where R1 is alkyl of at least 8 carbon atoms, R2 and R3 are the same or different groups selected from hydroxy-, polyhydroxy-, and amino-substituted alkyl, and X- is an anion. The amide and imidazolinium dispersant may be used in an amide-dispersant ratio of from 2:1 to 35:1. The amide compositions are effective on carpet materials containing natural and synthetic fibres e.g. wool, cotton, rayon, nylon, acrylics and polyesters, and may be applied by dipping, padding, spraying or coating.
