Abstract

In a stabilizing device, e.g. for mobile cranes, similar to that described in Specification 899,486, a pair of outrigger arms 2 are extended by a ram 3 to a point where further extension of the arms is prevented and a triangular member 5 is rotated in a direction to urge a link 16 downwardly. The link 16 is pivoted to a bracket 13 which mounts a wheel or wheel set 14 and is pivoted to a pair of links 10 and 11 pivotally connected to the vehicle. The wheels 14 are urged downwardly by the rotation of the member 5. In this position the ram 3 may be connected to a hydropneumatic spring device so that the vehicle can be moved with spring suspension. In the inoperative position of the apparatus, the wheels 14 are mounted on the vehicle body. In a modification, Fig. 3, the wheels 14 may be mounted on half axles 19 pivoted at 18 to the vehicle and connected by a crank 6 to the member 5. In another modification, Fig. 4, the arms 2 press against bellcrank levers 23 which are connected by links 16a to the wheel supporting links. In a vehicle having four stabilizing devices 3, hydraulic power is supplied from a pump 39 under the control of a valve 40, there being an individual valve 46 for each stabilizer. Fluid may be supplied either through line 37 or 38 to one side or other of the piston 32 of the stabilizer, the line 38 including a one-way valve 29 which may be tripped by pressure in line 30. The valves 46 are operated by air pressure from a compressor 47. To extend the stabilizers, a valve 49 is operated to apply air pressure to the valves 46 and valve 40 is placed in the position to apply fluid pressure in line 38, line 37 being opened to exhaust. Valves 44 are operated simultaneously with valves 46 to isolate one side of pistons 32 from the other. Release of air pressure from the valves 46 and 44 now locks the fluid in the stabilizers 3 and connects the opposite sides of pistons 32 to each other and to the hydropneumatic springs 45. To retract the rams in the stabilizers, valves 44 and 46 are actuated and pressure fluid is applied to line 37 by operation of valve 40. The fluid pressure in line 30 trips valve 29 to open the sides 33 of the pistons 32 to exhaust.
