Abstract

Merocyanine and monomethine cyanine dyes are obtained by reacting quaternized heterocyclic bases of formula <FORM:1116531/C4-C5/1> wherein Y is N(C2H5) or Se and X is an anion with anhydro-bases or keto-methylenic heterocyclic compounds. The heterocyclic bases and their quaternary salts form the subject matter of Specification 1,116,532. Specified merocyanine dyes of formula <FORM:1116531/C4-C5/2> wherein Y2 is O, S, Se or N(C2H5) and R is a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or aryl group, may be prepared by condensing a quaternized base with a compound of formula <FORM:1116531/C4-C5/3>
