Abstract

1,116,465. Surgical instruments. J. SHIPTON and S. N. SALEM. 12 May, 1967 [8 June, 1966], No. 25451/66. Heading A5R. An instrument for taking samples of tissue from the colon comprises an outer tube 10 closed at one end 15 and having an opening 16 near the closed end, and an inner member 17 carrying at its end adjacent the closed end of the tube a cutter 21 adapted to cut any tissue protruding into the tube through the opening 16, the tube 10 and inner member 17 being arranged such that withdrawing the member 17 produces a partial vacuum which sucks tissue in through the opening. As shown, the inner member 17 comprises a rod which is a close fit in the stainless steel tube 10 and the cutter comprises a sharpened disc 22 on a stem 20 secured to the end of the rod. The disc has apertures 23. The rod is provided with an operating handle (18) and the tube 10 is adjustably secured to a collar (12) arranged so that the instrument may be fitted to a sigmoidoscope (11) and inserted into the rectum. In alternate embodiments, the cutting disc may be replaced by radial cutting vanes or, Figure 8 (not shown), the disc is removable from the stem 20. The rod 17 may be replaced by a member provided with a piston.
