Abstract

An instrument for biopsy comprises a tube to be inserted in an organ from which a sample of tissue is to be taken and a cutting wire carried by the tube, the wire being arranged to extend, or to be movable to a position on which it extends, close to the mouth of the tube and substantially diametrically across said mouth. The instrument shown in Fig. 1 comprises a tube 1 with an oblique sharp edge 10 with a wire 3, e.g. of stainless steel, extending through holes 2 to the fastening means 4. The embodiment illustrated in Fig. 2 involves moving the wire from an inoperative position (as in Fig. 2) to an operative position with the wire extending diametrically across the mouth of the tube. Outside tube 21 is an axially movable sleeve 23, the mouth edge 29 of which is oblique and provided with an outwardly bent lip 24 forming a support for cutting wire 25. When ready for operation, the cannula 22 (which facilitates insertion of the instrument into the sampling place) is removed, the sleeve 23 is moved (by rotation of a threaded member connecting tube and sleeve) so that its front edge registers with slot 26 in tube 21, into which the wire slips, and after tightening the wire by moving the sleeve 23 backwardly, the instrument is rotated 180‹ or more, thus cutting the sample of tissue free.
