Abstract

1,215,439. Biopsy probe. RICHARD WOLF G.m.b.H. 30 April, 1969 [16 May, 1968], No. 21987/69. Heading A5R. A biopsy probe comprises a tubular shaft 1 having at one end a cutter head 8 including a cutter 11 and at the other end means for operating the cutter the portion of the shaft adjacent the cutter head being flexible la, the remainder of the shaft being rigid and of greater length than the said flexible portion. Preferably the flexible portion is 10-30 per cent of the length of the shaft, the rigid portion at the other end being attached to a handle 4 of forceps 3. The cutter head 8 comprises housing 9 with aperture 15, tubular cutter 11 with cutting edge 12, and cap 13 with ventilating hole 14. The cutter is attached to flexible connecting rod 2 by reinforcing sleeve 2a, and the cutting head 8 is screwed to threaded connector 10 which is soldered to the flexible portion 1a of the shaft. The other end of connecting rod 2 is connected to the second handle 6 of forceps 3. A vacuum may be applied at 17 to draw tissue into aperture 15, and the connecting rod may be immobilised by knurled headed screw 16, to ensure that the severed sample does not drop out of the head.
