Abstract
629,824. Infusion and biopsy needles. TURKEL, H. Dec. 20, 1945, No. 34650. [Class 81(ii)] An infusion and biopsy instrument comprises a hollow shaft with cutting means on one end and an inwardly converging mouth at this end with or without a hollow guide needle therefor. The hollow guide needle which has a bevelled point 10, Fig. 3, a shoulder 4 with preferably 45 degree sides, and an internally tapered head 5, is pierced through the skin to the bone, with stylet 27 in position. Stylet 27 is replaced by hollow cutting needle 28, Fig. 7, of equal diameter which has a knurled head 18, saw teeth 14, inwardly converging mouth 29, Fig. 9, to retain core of cut tissue, and graduated neck 16 to indicate amount of drilling into the bone beyond the guide needle point. The guide needle is then pushed into the prepared hole and cutting needle 28 is removed, when internally tapered head 5 serves to receive an adaptor syringe for infusion, while the core of cut tissue is ejected from cutting needle 28 by stylet 20. Alternative tissue retaining means in the mouth of the cutting needle are described.
